Perry is a Chicago native she was born into Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might cause. Perry said she felt nervous to be an actor in high school but began performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California and find work as a stage actress. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Her father portrayed her in the ABC show Scandal. The same year her character was cast a young model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's character. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being connected to this character.
